Home prices have surged drastically this year, making it difficult for those looking to but their first home. So people are still renting. But San Antonio rents aren’t necessarily dropping. From finding your perfect new home to negotiating rent prices, searching for an apartment in San Antonio can be quite the experience. Taking inspiration from our sister publication SFGate in San Francisco, MySA is looking at local properties showcasing the best, worst, and everything in between here in the Alamo City. Let’s guess the rent.
We’re leaving downtown San Antonio urban luxury and heading west this week. We’ve uncovered a Craigslist posting for a one-bedroom home for rent that was built in the ’50s … the 1850s that is.
Say hello to the Alois Walter House in Castroville, Texas, a small town about a 25-minute drive west of San Antonio that hangs its hat on its history.
This one-bedroom house is a unique Alsatian-style cottage with a 19th century feel. (Really. Wait until you see the toilet.)
So how much will it cost to live like Anne of Green Gables?
Let’s take a look.
A possible living room.
CraigslistAs someone who used to report on Castroville, I’ve been in Alsatian homes before. They have very unique but simple layouts that essentially connect one room to another.
Let’s say this is the living room with restored wood flooring.

Here is what could possibly be the bedroom, which has a door that opens up into the front of the home.
CraigslistIt won’t take long to walk directly into the bedroom. The windows aren’t huge, which gives these Alsatian homes a unique natural lighting situation.
Yes. Of course there is electricity.

The kitchen appliances are simple, but the exposed limestone is charming.
CraigslistThe appliances in the home are pretty standard but the kitchen does have a unique feature though.

The antique sink is built on top of cabinets.
CraigslistAn antique sink. The sink is installed into a cabinet with glass doors, giving it a modern touch.

Ever wanted to use an antique, high-tank toilet? No? Really?
CraigslistThe high tank toilet with the chain flush handle and a copper (brass?) tub that is lined with ceramic (acrylic?) that screams antique.

The quaint yard is a big selling point for this one-bedroom rental.
CraigslistThe backyard is probably the best selling point for this rental home. The current owner says on Craigslist that they are still working to improve the house, but have created a Texas cottage garden in the back with native plants.
So how much will cost to live in this 1,300-square-foot settler-era home? It will cost $1,150 a month, perfect if you want small town charm, (though you will be settling for a long commute into San Antonio).
There isn’t enough data available in Zumper to see the average rent for a one-bedroom home in Castroville.
